I walked out along Bedok Jetty one morning in March, with no plan except to look. People were already there, unpacking stools and rods, threading line, sheltering under umbrellas, talking. A few small fish turned in a cooler. Beyond the railings, the ships sat at anchor as they always do, a long row on the horizon that nobody seemed to notice. I followed the jetty out until the people thinned and only the water, the empty seats and the lifebuoys were left. These pictures are that walk, and the unhurried company of strangers by the sea.
