Fire Dragon Festival 2026

As dusk falls over Sims Drive, the air thickens with the scent of sandalwood and burning straw. Outside the temple gates, the quiet hum of a neighborhood evening gives way to an older, heavier rhythm.

In the fading light, the preparations are tactile and deliberate. Hands move quickly along the dragon’s woven body, pressing thousands of burning joss sticks into its dry straw scales. Slowly, the creature comes alive in the dark, glowing with pinpricks of orange heat and wrapping the street in a thick, fragrant haze.

When the drums strike, the dragon rises. Hoisted high on wooden poles, it weaves through the night in a trailing ribbon of smoke and falling embers. There is no distance between the ritual and the crowd. Onlookers surge forward to walk alongside the beast, moving together in the heat and swirling ash. Up close, sweat catches the amber glow on the bearers’ faces as they muscle the heavy frame through the press of bodies, everyone carried along by the clash of cymbals.

Then, as quickly as it rose, the fire claims the straw and the street returns to the dark. What remains is the lingering smoke, the ash underfoot, and the fleeting memory of fire cutting through the city night.
