Nine Emperor Gods Festival, 2024

Long after the day-trippers have left East Coast Beach, the shoreline wakes to a different rhythm. Toward midnight, the dark stretch of sand fills with a sea of white—hundreds of devotees gathered at the water’s edge to send the Nine Emperor Gods back to the heavens.

The air is heavy with salt wind and the thick, sweet smoke of giant joss sticks. From the park connectors to the tide line, the night is cut by the clash of cymbals, the urgent beat of drums, and the glow of yellow flags whipping in the coastal breeze. Ornate sedan chairs rock violently on the shoulders of bearers, their movements raw and breathless as they surge through the pressing crowd toward the black water.

At the shoreline, that frantic energy gives way to deep, focused devotion. Kneeling on the damp sand with glowing incense raised between their palms, devotees bow toward the dark horizon of the Singapore Strait. In the dim coastal light, the embers of thousands of joss sticks catch the faces in the crowd, illuminating quiet prayers, white garments, and the restless surf lapping at their feet.

When the final prayers are offered and the sacred urns are veiled for the journey back, a sudden stillness reclaims the beach. The drums fall silent, the crowd drifts back toward the city in the dark, and only the scent of incense lingers over the incoming tide.
