Rain over Tokyo

The rain does not interrupt the city.
It slows it, softens it,
turns every hard edge to a held breath.

Somewhere between the drip and the dusk,
people become quieter versions of themselves.
Some walk with someone.
Some walk with only their thoughts.
All of them move as though the evening
has asked them, gently, not to rush.

There is a loneliness here,
but it is the kind that feels like company,
a private song, a small roof,
a world shrunk down to the width of an arm.

And there is warmth, too,
in a lit window, in a laugh,
in the simple fact of being
somewhere, in the wet, together.

The light lies down on the ground
and everything glows a little more than it should.
What was ordinary becomes tender.
What was hurried becomes a pause.

In the rain, Tokyo is not loud.
It is cool, and quiet, and a little in love
with itself, with you,
with the hour when nothing needs to be said.
